Wonderful book!

A children’s story about how Chris Hadfield was inspired to become an astronaut as a kid growing up on Stag Island。 Stag Island isn’t far from where I live so connect with him on that level。 Chris was the 1st Canadian astronaut to captain the ISS! I’m also a great fan of the illustrations by The Fan Brothers。 Check out The Night Gardener for more of their work。

Such a gorgeous story about a young boy overcoming his fear of the dark to pursue his dream。

This book would be great to use when discussing fears and/or dreams!

This book is inspired by Astronaut Chris Hadfield’s childhood。 It offers an insight into being afraid of the dark and offers some context on how Chris overcomes this fear when watching the 1969 moon landings。

Excellent book about a boy transforming himself into something stronger in pursuit of exploration and curiosity。 My 3 year old son was astonished by the parallels he and this boy had。 It brought him back to his passion for space, and made him feel brave。

Beautiful illustrations accompany a story about overcoming your fears。 The monsters are just scary enough and the pug brings humour to the illustrations。Includes a brief biography and some childhood photos of Hadfield。This is a whimsical read aloud for even older children。 Offers discussion and research opportunities for older students。Read The Darkest Dark。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Even if your kid is not into astronauts and space stuff, this is an excellent book for kids who are afraid of the dark。 The pictures throughout the book have these black alien shapes in them that don’t go away even after young Chris is no longer afraid of them。 I’m no psychologist but I love the way the things are still there; I think what I like is that most times in books about the dark, when the shadows turn out to be toys or a pile of clothes on the floor, it undermines the kid’s imagination Even if your kid is not into astronauts and space stuff, this is an excellent book for kids who are afraid of the dark。 The pictures throughout the book have these black alien shapes in them that don’t go away even after young Chris is no longer afraid of them。 I’m no psychologist but I love the way the things are still there; I think what I like is that most times in books about the dark, when the shadows turn out to be toys or a pile of clothes on the floor, it undermines the kid’s imagination。 Like, see? It’s just your stupid imagination that scared you。 I just love that the shadow things remain, and as the book says, Chris is the thing that changed。 。。。more

Fantastic story of conquering fear, believing in your imagination and following your dreams。 The same incredible illustrator as The Barnabus Project turning the author’s words into great works of art!

Oh hello, it’s me again, back to talk to you more about Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield and his amazing work。 Get comfortable。Chris is a huge supporter of education and reading for children。 As well as his memoir and photograph collection taken from the International Space Station, he has also published this children’s picture book based on his own childhood。 Chris was afraid of the dark as a young boy despite his love of space, until he watched the Moon Landing on TV in 1969 at the age of 10。 Oh hello, it’s me again, back to talk to you more about Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield and his amazing work。 Get comfortable。Chris is a huge supporter of education and reading for children。 As well as his memoir and photograph collection taken from the International Space Station, he has also published this children’s picture book based on his own childhood。 Chris was afraid of the dark as a young boy despite his love of space, until he watched the Moon Landing on TV in 1969 at the age of 10。 It encouraged him to see the beauty and the mystery of the dark instead of the monsters under the bed, which has led him to be brave beyond belief in other areas of his life。 His story lets kids know that it’s okay to be afraid of the unknown, it can be scary, but that being brave and facing your fears can make your dreams come true。 Of course I choked up at the end, Chris’s story and writing seem to do that to me no matter the scenario。 Aside from the charming story, the art style is adorable and the illustrators have managed to incorporate so many Easter Eggs from Chris’s life, easy to spot if you’ve read his memoir, which makes the experience extra fun。 Because it’s a picture book it’s accessible from quite a young age, and I would whole-heartedly recommend it to any adult fans of Chris or those buying for young children。 。。。more

I was expecting something different when I started reading the story。 The story was good overall, but I enjoyed the author info the most。 It was pretty cool seeing how the story and illustrations matched the author's childhood and life。 I was expecting something different when I started reading the story。 The story was good overall, but I enjoyed the author info the most。 It was pretty cool seeing how the story and illustrations matched the author's childhood and life。 。。。more

The Darkest Dark is a picture book that retells the story of how real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield grew from a young boy who enjoyed pretending he was an astronaut with a fear of the dark to realising his dreams and spending many months in space and flying round the earth thousands of times。Chris loves pretending to be an astronaut。 He is always too busy to do the normal things like having a bath or going to bed as he is saving the planet from aliens or is on a very important mission to Mars。 T The Darkest Dark is a picture book that retells the story of how real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield grew from a young boy who enjoyed pretending he was an astronaut with a fear of the dark to realising his dreams and spending many months in space and flying round the earth thousands of times。Chris loves pretending to be an astronaut。 He is always too busy to do the normal things like having a bath or going to bed as he is saving the planet from aliens or is on a very important mission to Mars。 There is one thing that Chris doesn’t love though and that is the dark。 The dark is scary and attracts the wrong sort of aliens。 But one night everything changes and Chris sees the magic that is to be found in even the darkest dark…As a young boy, Chris, like many children, was scared of the dark。 His parents would verify that his room was free-from any alien life before Chris could settle into dreams of flying his own spaceship all the way to the Moon。 Chris was pretending to be an astronaut at the same time Neil Armstrong was facing the reality of flying into space and becoming the first man to ever set foot onto the surface of the Moon。 As Chris witnessed the event in a crowded living room at the house of a neighbour he instantly knew what he wanted to be in life。 And Chris would achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut。This delightful picture book is a celebration of overcoming fears and realising dreams。 It is a wonderful story and is expertly illustrated by the incredibly talented Fan Brothers。 After the story there is lots of additional information about Chris Hadfield that provide detail on his childhood, his career as an astronaut and what he has done since he stopped flying into space。 A personal message from Chris is complimented by several photographs of him growing up and of his time in space。For any child with big dreams of flying into space this is a must read。 In fact, any child with dreams of being anything should read this as Chris shows that little people can achieve the biggest of dreams。 “The dark is for dreams - and morning is for making them come true。” Chris Hadfield。Recommended for 5+。 。。。more

A young Canadian boy loves the idea of space。 But, he is afraid of the dark。 He not only overcomes his fear of the dark but grows up to be one of the first Canadian astronauts。 I love biographical children's books。 Nice work, Chris on writing one that is fun to read and inspirational。 A young Canadian boy loves the idea of space。 But, he is afraid of the dark。 He not only overcomes his fear of the dark but grows up to be one of the first Canadian astronauts。 I love biographical children's books。 Nice work, Chris on writing one that is fun to read and inspirational。 。。。more

A lovely book to help children overcome their fears and to encourage children to use their imagination。

I think this book offers a great insight into a common fear of being scared of the dark。 I found the image which shows the dark quite scary and I think children would easily be able to relate their own fear of the dark to the image。It offers some context into how the fear was overcome as the book take place around the Moon Landing in 1969 and how being able to see the dark in a different way - an opportunity to explore a different world, could really help children to overcome this fear。 It appro I think this book offers a great insight into a common fear of being scared of the dark。 I found the image which shows the dark quite scary and I think children would easily be able to relate their own fear of the dark to the image。It offers some context into how the fear was overcome as the book take place around the Moon Landing in 1969 and how being able to see the dark in a different way - an opportunity to explore a different world, could really help children to overcome this fear。 It approaches the topic in a very different way to Lemony Snickets - The Dark。 The book also has a message of how to achieve your dreams you have to overcome obstacles - in this case Chris wants to be an astronaut but he first needs to overcome his fear of the dark as it’s very dark in space! There are good links into Space as a topic of exploration where there are then more details about astronauts at the back of the book。 。。。more

What a fantastic book! It's written by the astronaut Chris Hadfield and perfectly captures a boy's fears of the dark。 The boy, Chris, is amazed by the stars in the sky and the beauty of space; learning to overcome his worries and quite literally 'reach for the stars'。 This would be perfect for a year five class studying Earth and Space, they could investigate craters, chart the stars and planets, look at the phases of the moon, orbits and paint their own galaxies。 What a fantastic book! Boys loved this book & I loved the message jt sent!

I really enjoyed reading this book about a little boy who wants to become an astronaut。 I thought that the message in this book would be really inspiring to children to dream big and also that not everything seems so scary as it is。 The dark may seem scary as it is black but if it wasn’t dark you wouldn’t be able to see the stars or the northern lights。
